A pastry brush is a useful cooking utensil that looks like a painting brush but is used to spread butter, oil, or glaze on foods. Also called a basting brush, this food safe tool features a plastic or wooden handle with bristles made of natural or manmade materials. When the food brush is dipped into butter or sauces, the liquids cling to the bristles and then release from the brush as they come into contact with food surfaces.

Common uses for a food grade brush include brushing pastries with butter, adding an egg wash to bread loaves, or basting meat with broth or drippings. You’ll find brushes of different styles that are better suited for one task over another. Pastry brushes are used to add a thin coating of oil or glaze to foods, giving chefs control over how much liquid they add and how much surface area is covered.
