Customer questions about this product

Is a pastry brush different from a basting brush?
Both brushes are the same, however you should only use your brush for either pastries or for basting and not both prep tasks. Using separate brushes for baking tasks and meat basting is important, as it ensures that flavors are not being accidentally transferred between your pastry and meat products.
What type of pastry brush material is best?
The answer all depends on your intended application. Synthetic ones are highly resistant and can be used on wet or dry surfaces. Silicone ones can even withstand high temperatures while resisting stains and odors. Meanwhile, boar or natural style bristles do a good job of retaining fluids, which is helpful for preparing large quantities of product.

Carlisle 4037800 Details

This basic but functional, Carlisle 4037800 2" Sparta Meteor bright white boar bristle pastry / basting brush with hook can be used for coating fluffy fresh baked pastries with butter, egg wash, or water, or for coating meats with delicious marinades and sauces. Now available with a shorter handle, the 2" pastry brush is perfect for smaller treats. It is made with soft, flagged white boar bristles that are double boiled, bleached, and sterilized to insure the highest quality and sanitization and are molded into the brush's base to prevent bacteria. Plus, the boar bristles work better than alternative brushes for spreading thin liquids such as olive oil, butter, and vinegar-based marinades.

With its wide and flat design, this brush is ideal for jobs like basting a roast, buttering phyllo dough sheets, or applying an egg wash on large loaves and pastries. The larger size of it is even helpful for spreading liquids or sauce, making it great even for tasks like making pizza. Easy to use, this pastry brush is sure to become a go-to kitchen tool!

To clean, simply dip the brush in a commercial cleaning solution. Its durable construction can withstand temperatures reaching 500 degrees. A hook has been crafted onto the outside of the base allowing the brush to hang on the lip of crocks or other containers, preventing contamination and bristle burn, melt, or distortion, often resulting from resting against hot pan bottoms. The Carlisle 4037800 boar bristle pastry brush has a 2" brush width and an 8" handle with an oval loop at its end for easy storage.

Customer Reviews

We bought these as a recommendation from another for butter basting. They hold the butter pretty well in the bristles, however, they are a pain to clean thoroughly. After a while they start to deteriorate to the point that the bristles fall out, probably from all the cleaning. They are very difficult to keep clean.

Great brush have been using these since culinary school. Boar bristle won't melt like plastic ones can. Hook for hanging it on the side of a container.

Michael M. on 11/20/2021

I do not recommend the boar bristle brush. The bristles come loose very easily and may end up in the food you are planning to serve.

Very study brush that can be used for differential applications. The handle holds and the bristles do not fall out. We recommend this product

Kevin T. on 05/25/2021

Follow your food code and don't let the inspector cite you a violation for not having the appropriate basting brush, don't go cheap and buy a home depot ones, this is the correct one and you are not gonna regreted.

Bari F. from Julio G Azpurua on 04/25/2021

I’ve tried silicone brushes but the bristles either break or don’t hold enough of my marinade liquid. After giving this boar bristle brush a try I threw away my silicone one. Just clean it immediately after use and lay flat to dry. No lingering smells or odors collect from previous use. The handle is nice to keep your brush from contacting any other surface when in use.

Laurence K. on 09/22/2020

this is a durable pastry brush, so durable that the bristles will not come out of its housing. at least mine is still working solid even after use of about 5 years.

Muhammad A. on 05/29/2020

I love this brush. I had one for years that finally wore out and couldn't find another until I saw it on here. These Work Great!

M. L. from ADRC Of Florence Co. on 09/09/2019

These brushes work great. The hook keeps the brush from falling into the sauce. The bristles hold up well. I would definitely buy these again.

Carolyn S. on 12/06/2017

Fairly durable basting brush that we use on a daily basis. The bristles occasionally come out, but not bad. We love the added hook feature.

Jason B. from The Toasted Traveler on 10/16/2017

Awesome brush great buy I use it when I am buttering bread or even when I am grilling and putting BBQ sauce on ribs or chicken.

Peter S. on 06/15/2017

This is a great pastry brush at a great price. We love the fact that it holds the bristles & they don't come out with the glaze!

Justin R. on 01/04/2017

This nice 2 inch brush is perfect for using for your pastry goods like a pie we use a mixture of milk egg and butter gets deep down in the crevices I don't worry about the bristles falling off it's a very high-quality brush and will always keep purchasing these boar bristles

Brenda F. from Penelopes Lil Cafe on 11/02/2016

These are great for glaze sugar cookies as well as many others. The quality is great as always. I love using this website as a sure solution to any need.

Mike B. on 10/03/2016

Excellent pastry brush because it has the hook that hooks onto the side of the pan and prevents the brush from falling into your liquid.

Connie F. on 05/14/2016

After using boar's hair brushes you will never go back to those annoying rubber-bristled brushes. Those may be easier to clean but they just don't work as well as the real deal.

Douglas I. on 09/13/2015

These brushes are great to use in our restaurant they are durable and the handle that holds the brush up is perfect For it not to fall in the pan we are using

George S. on 08/27/2015

These are great brushes. The quality is on par with any other brush I've used. The hook on the back is a great feature. We haven't had any issues with the bristles melting.

Lydia C. from Pinpoint Restaurant on 08/25/2015

The bristles do not fall out like the wooden handled brushes, very economical to purchase so I won't feel bad about tossing them after they've run their race

Joyce B. from Breezy Point International on 08/21/2015

Have had mine for a few years now, its used on an Espresso Bar. It has outlasted all the cheap ones and DOES NOT loose bristles! Will never order another kind!

Holli C. from Sunrise Donuts on 07/12/2015

I like having different sized pastry brushes on hand, and I love that this one is dishwasher safe. I also like that it's only 2 inches across and that there is a hook so I can rest it on the side of my shallow cereal bowl in between brushing pastry. As with all brushes, I do have to pull the bristles before use to make sure none are loose - I hate when there are bristles in my pastry!!

Gina S. on 07/10/2015

Overall I am satisfied with this brush. The notch in the handle is nice for hanging it off the edge of a cup. I have noticed that the bristles are getting a little ragged looking, but to be expected after being put to use.

Michael H. on 06/16/2015

I have to admit I am one of those bad people who has used a regular paint brush for years. What a waste of time! These are wonderful and i love the little hook to hang it on a pan.

Deborah B. from Miss Debs on 09/15/2014

Sturdy brush with nice bristles work great for many sauces and liquid butter basting. Hook holds it in a Cambro nicely for quick and easy use.

Cameron W. on 06/03/2014

I use this product on a daily basis and it has been great. The best part of it is the hook feature. It really sets this product a part from its competition. only down fall some of the hairs are coming out

Kedby K. from Kedbys Kreations & Party Rental on 04/24/2014

Very nice pastry brush for brushing olive oil onto dough. It can also be used to dust whole wheat flour out of a grain mill or container after milling it. Its a good quality and sturdy brush. Cleans up nicely. I like the fact that its made of natural boar bristles rather than synthetic bristles. Just what I was looking for. Would recommend.

Greg L. from Lemondrop Bakery on 01/20/2014

Well made boars hair brush. Seen in the photo next to the bigger brush, both from a 1/6 size 4" deep food pan. Very useful hook helps keep things tidy.

Dario C. on 10/18/2013

Great brush for basting, decorating, etc. The bristles are the right firmness and don't fall out like in some cheap brushes. It even has a handy hook so you can hang it up.

David M. from Professor Cocktail on 11/27/2012

These work pretty well. I deffinetly prefer them over the cheaper wooden ones. The bristles last a much longer time and dont fall out all into your food.

Tom M. on 10/18/2012

I received this brush about 3 months ago and it has been great since day 1. It cleans up very nicely and easily and the best part, it comes at a great price!

Michael J. from The Pie Kitchen on 10/17/2012

This Carlisle brush is great for baking, cooking, etc. I love the Bristle Brush as apposed to silicone. Its key advantage is that it has a hook clip so you don't lose it.

Tristan M. from Tristan's on 04/09/2012

Carlisle continues to be a brand you can trust. These pastry brushes are sturdy, durable, and easy to clean. They are good for a variety of different applications where a gentle, even spread is needed; i.e. sauce, butter, egg washes, etc. Highly recommended product.

Michael H. on 03/01/2012

I am very pleased with this boar bristle brush! I especially like the hanging hook as it keeps it from drowning in whatever I am using it with.

Roberta G. on 02/20/2011

This pastry brush has been a great addition to my kitchen utensil collection. It holds butter and other basting liquids really well and the bristles don't shred everywhere like some other models I have used.
