Questions & Answers

In order to prevent unwanted build-up of oils, grease, and food, surfaces should be cleaned after use while still slightly warm. Harsh chemicals or scouring pads should not be used—only hot water and a cloth or sponge are needed. If some areas require extra cleaning, a mild scouring pad can be used.
How is Lodge's pre-seasoned cookware seasoned?
All of Lodge's pre-seasoned cookware is seasoned with soy-based vegetable oil. No peanut oil or animal fat is used.
How is the top diameter measured in frying pans and woks, and how accurate is this measurement?
The top diameter is the measurement across the pan, from the interior of one side of the rim to the other. These measurements are approximate because many frying pans and woks have a curved upper rim, making precise measurement difficult. The standard naming convention uses top diameter, so while multiple brands may offer a 10" pan, there may be slight variations in size between each brand's 10" pan or wok.
My new cast iron feels rough in some areas. Is this normal?
Yes. This is a result of the sand casting process. With use and replenishment of the seasoning, the pan will become smoother. Unlike other types of cookware, Lodge Cast Iron only gets better with use. For concerns about roughness, it is OK to use a fine grade of sandpaper to smooth out the rough areas. Make sure to re-season the item before using.
What's the difference between a riveted and a welded handle?
A riveted handle is connected by small metal pieces (called rivets) that are crushed between the handle and the pan body to attach them together. This type of handle is more common on copper and aluminum cookware.
For a handle to be welded, the metal must first be melted and then adhered to the pan body. This creates a strong bond that leaves little to no space in between, so bacteria and other food crumbs can’t collect and cause sanitation issues. Both are long lasting solutions for fry and sauce pan handles because they are durable and can withstand heat.
Customers appreciate this lightweight, durable pan that heats quickly and offers even cooking, similar to cast iron but easier to handle. It comes pre-seasoned, though many suggest additional seasoning for optimal non-stick performance. Ideal for various cooking needs, it requires proper maintenance to last. Some users note initial seasoning chips.

Nice heavy duty pan, very high quality. This was my first time using a cast-iron pan, it says that it comes pre-seasoned but you definitely will need to season the pan yourself before using for optimal results. Also, do not put in the dishwasher.

All of the benefits of cast iron with less than half of the weight. This makes it extremely easy to use for a multitude of purposes. The metal is thick and sturdy and the rivets holding the handle are virtually indestructible. With proper care, this pan will last for generations. The pan might arrive with some chips cracked off of the pre-seasoning but this is not an issue at all. The pan should be re-seasoned upon arrival and repeated every now and then. There is a lot of pseudo-science about seasoning. The best process to use is to rub vegetable oil into your hands and then work it over the entire pan with your hands in a very thin film (resist the urge to glop it on or else you'll end up with a sticky mess in the end). Place it in the oven face down and bake at 350 Read More

This is a phenomenal pan. It’s the perfect size for sautéing a steak or chicken breast and is also oven safe and very easy to clean. The lengthy handle makes maneuvering this skillet during use very easy. Highly recommended!

This isn't the best pan for handheld flipping of food, but is awesome to use tools in because of the low lip. Seasons easily, browns food better than anything else I've used. I think there are better options out there, but you won't be poorly served by lodge.

I love these carbon steel pans! They offer everything you want in a cast iron pan in a much lighter package. Treat them the same way you would a cast iron skillet, and they’ll last a very long time. This is my go-to pan whenever possible.

I am very disappointed with these pans, everything sticks and they are a major hassle to clean up after, I was hoping to get the larger pans if these worked out but I will definitely not be buying anymore of these pans. I do not recommend these pans!

Very sturdy and solid weight. Handle length and angle worked well for flipping food. The pan came in preseason and ready to cook. Works just like cast iron pans but with a lighter weight

These pans are awesome. They are almost like cast irons but get hotter way faster. I think I bought 2 dozen, but I've found that I only use 2 or three a night during service. This is because I just wipe them out like a cast iron after I'm done making whatever ingredient So they aren't like other sauté pans where, if you are busy, your burnin through them. They are very well made and I would highly recommend.

I was happy with this Lodge French style carbon steel fry pan. It heated it quickly and evenly. The 12" is a good size for most of my cooking needs. I would recommend getting the silicone handle holder to go with it.

Great carbon steel pan, the shallow sides are sloped to make flipping and turning food easier. The pre seasoning on the pan holds up well and gets better over time. Great buy.

After spending the better part of the past year building up my cast iron cookware collection I wanted to open up my horizons to include some different tools. Once I saw that Lodge also offered a nice line of carbon steel products I knew I had to invest in a few pieces. The biggest benefit of carbon steel is the lighter weight. This allows the skillet to heat up much quicker than cast iron. This proved to be extremely useful when I needed to quickly toast some cumin, coriander and black peppercorns. I only need to use the skillet for a few minutes and it just didn’t make sense to have to go through the effort just to use my cast iron.

In love with this skillet, it has became the most used one for cooking meat, which can be seared perfectly, and vegetable.
Cleaning is very easy, just use warm water and a steel wool pad and when dry apply a thin oil coating to keep the natural no stick properties.
It is made of thick steel but it is light enough to be handled with one hand.

A friend turned me onto this pan, and I'm glad he did. Great for searing meat and I especially like it for cooking up eggs. Comes pre-seasoned so theres no setup work involved in getting this pan to its full potential. Super sloped edges makes getting tools in and out of of the pan surface a breeze.

Awesome skillets - much lighter that standard cast iron pans but hold and distribute heat much like a cast-iron. Much preferable to stainless steel skillets in our kitchen.

Purchased two of these for cooking our proteins, they heat up quickly and have done a great job of cooking our meats consistently with a nice sear.
