Customer Q&A Ask a Question

Does the hp (horsepower) rating of this mixer reflect the output to the mixer bowl?
Our motor hp reference is meant to indicate the horsepower rating of the motor itself and not the mixer's horsepower output to the mixer bowl.
What are the differences between commercial and residential KitchenAid mixers?
Compared to residential KitchenAid mixers, commercial KitchenAid units are more powerful, incorporate durable components, offer extra safety features, and have an extended warranty. Commercial mixers also come with an 8 qt. stackable stainless steel bowl rather than a 6 qt. bowl, allowing you to mix larger batches of ingredients. While residential mixers include cast aluminum accessories that must be hand washed, commercial mixers come with heavy-duty stainless steel accessories that are dishwasher safe for fast cleanup. KitchenAid commercial mixers are NSF Listed and include a 73 1/2” orange commercial-grade cord to ensure superior safety and sanitation. Working with a residential mixer in a commercial kitchen will void the warranty on your unit and may result in health inspector violations.

Kitchenaid 8 Quart Commercial Mixer

Check out this video to find out why professionals are flocking to this new Kitchen Aid® Commercial Stand Mixer. Designed with chefs in mind, this mixer is just what you need to whip up large and small batches of your most popular recipes.

A commercial mixer is a critical part of many foodservice businesses, especially bakeries. That’s why we’ve laid out our commercial mixers according to the major factors that most impact their performance. The first consideration is the type of mixer that you want. Planetary mixers are the most common and versatile type. They mix ingredients together in batter or dough with whisks, beaters, or hooks, for high volume jobs. Spiral mixers are great for specializing in dough and with other mixtures that have a thick texture, making them great for bread and pretzel bakeries. Last, vertical cutter mixers can be used like a giant blender for everything from salad prep to dough preparation but it gives your baked goods a different consistency than dough prepared in other mixers. Each of these mixer types is also divided into standard, medium, and heavy duty applications. Standard duty mixers give you the power needed to create foods in smaller batches. Medium duty models are good for larger quantities of food and keep up with demand. And heavy duty units are the best in terms of strength, reliability, durability, and power for bakeries and pizzerias. Every commercial mixer also comes with a different transmission. Belt driven units use a simple strap system, similar to an engine belt, to turn the agitator inside the mixing bowl which makes them easier to maintain and repair. Direct drive mixers let you change speeds with the simple push of a button, and gear driven mixers utilize an intricate inner assembly of gears and cogs to prevent slips and stutters. Finally , variable speed mixers are made specifically to deliver torque and power for light duty use. Mixers are also available with different size bowls, from 5 – 220 quarts to accommodate the quantity of ingredients that you want to mix together. Depending on the size, you can use a smaller unit on the countertop or a work table, while a larger product is best used on the floor. You can also find commercial mixers with different speed options to operate quickly or slowly, and each commercial mixer comes with an internal motor that ranges from ½ to 7 hp. Best of all, you can easily find dozens of models that are NSF Certified so you can be sure the unit you buy is easy to clean and sanitize.

I purchased this mixer Sep 11,2015 from Webstaurant store. My bakery opened November 17, 2015. I have been using this mixer since November 15, 2015, 2 days before opening day. This is the worst mixer I have ever used!!. I stopped using this mixer because it is literally falling apart. The beater bar makes a terrible noise. The wire whip is garbage and looks like it is mangled together. It does not work on high speed except only on occasions. It will just stop while it is on. Most of the time, it is only 2 speeds, low and high. It does not hit low enough in the bottom the mix a darn thing. I HATE HATE HATE this mixer. I purchased a different mixer from Webstaurant that was only a 7 qt which was not this brand and that is still going strong. I have had kitchen aids in the past and they all burned up within 30 days of use. This was only mixing cupcake batter and icing. I have 2 other 20 qt mixers to do heavy things in, but this 8 qt Kitchen aid mixer I purchased because I was told that it could handle a bakery, well, it cant and it is GARBAGE!!! I want a refund or exchange. This is USELESS and a total waste of money. Don't waste your hard earned money on this FLOP!! Read Less Read More

very disappointed with the service from kitchen aid....mine is less than a year old and the lever that lift the bowl no longer works, the speed selector when going past speed 2 will turn off the mixer unless I move it very quickly...also the handle for the bowl has fallen off...it is very difficult to get through to the support and I got transferred so many times only to end up at a voice mail where my call was never returned ...I can not recommend this mixer

I found that this mixer is rendered totally useless as it has no available splash guard and the batter splashes out of the bowl at speed 4 and goes all over the place. I used the same batter in my 7 quart mixer ( from another manufacturer ) and have no problem. I thought I would be able to use more batter in the 8 quart mixer. I will never use this mixer again. I have used it once & will never use it again. It is useless. I spent a lot of money on it - don't waste yours. I would rate this no stars but not given that option.

from Ethelyn Lowe on

Thank you for your review, Ethelyn. We are sorry to hear that you are not satisfied with this mixer. This 8 qt. mixer can handle up to 8 lb. of dough. Filling it too much may cause the issues you are having.

I purchased this commercial KitchenAid and it works great, but everytime I even just barely touch the bowl to the mixer it scratches...I've only had it a couple of months but it looks old due to the scratches all over it, it works great but the paint on it is awful - was hoping it would look as good as it works, but it doesn't...for the price, disappointed.

This thing is garbage. The locking mechanism that brings the bowl up and down broke instantly, rendering it completely useless. Plus it rattles like crazy when turned on.

I have had the professional 600 for 10 years for my business and it did a wonderful job, when it was time to replace the old girl I decided to go commercial for the bigger bowl, but after a couple of uses it bogs down the bowl shakes and the dough clings to the beater attachment .... very disappointed

This mixer may be NSF certified and may be a great purchase for larger tasks in a residential setting, but it is not a standard duty commercial mixer. 3 of these mixers have failed on me in less than 2 years. I make croissant & danish doughs for a few hours ONCE A WEEK. My doughs are about 60% absorption rate with about 9 cups of flour. This mixer is advertised to handle 16 cups of flour. Commercial mixers are expected to be used for hours, all week long. KitchenAid states in their owner's manual that they are so confident in their product that they will replace the "failed" product for up to 2 years. I can assure you that the mixers truly break and that they are not made for commercial use. The first mixer broke after about 3 months because the bowl continuously would unhook while mixing. The second one was obviously better than the first one, but after about a year, the whole head of the mixer was shifting 1/4 to 1/2 inch. The mixer was literally falling apart. 2 1/2 months after receiving the 3rd mixer, its gears broke. I have been waiting for a warranty replacement for 8 weeks. KitchenAid is telling me they still don't know when I will receive my replacement. Save time & money and invest in a true commercial piece of equipment. Read Less Read More

I have been using this commercial grade stand mixer for over 2 years now and it is the best stand mixer that I have ever used! Even though I am using this at home, I find this stand mixer to be much better than the residential KitchenAid stand mixer that I use to use for years. With my old residential one, there were times I was concerned with wearing out the motor with the way it was sounding. But with this thing, I have made heavy doughs with no concern of burning out the motor. The fact that I can fit it under residential kitchen cabinets and not have to move it out when I load it up is a great space saver.

I have not had any issues with this mixer. This is a perfect size to make a triple batch of cookies. Also works wells while whipping up marshmallows. This is my go to mixer for medium size jobs.

from Crazy Daisy's Sweets and Treats on

I bought this for my home based side business when i have make larger cake orders. It takes some getting used to when you are so accustomed the usual 5 quart cake mixer but it runs well and make life easy for those bulk orders. No more double batch making for me :) Now i can double and triple my recipes with ease.

This mixer has worked well so far. A little hard to add in ingredients (especially flour) while you are mixing but it gets the job done. The bowl is nice and large and has done up to 4 batches of cinnamon rolls at one time.

from The Homestead on

This mixer is an absolute monster. Huge bowl with an 8 quart capacity is perfect for those christmas cookies or pies around the holiday time!

This mixer has been used for everything! We purchased attachments to grind meat, make sausage, shred cabbage and carrots for coleslaw and more. With the included attachments we've made pizza dough, pretzels, whipped cream and cake batter. This item is a work horse. I scoff at the costco and sams club specials. They are NOT the same. You will not be disappointed.

from Allen BBQ on

This is a fantastic mixer. It is very reliable and powerful. The bowl is a good size and for the power, the mixer isn't too loud.

from Coat Check Coffee on

A real work horse. We weren't ready to commit for a larger mixer, and got two of these. They run everyday with no problems so far. Easy to clean.

from CSSC on

looking to mix small batches of things this mixer is perfect! it has a quality that you wont get from one brought at your local store.

from H&H CITY PIZZA on

I am in love with this mixer. I know it says it is 'commercial' but really it is perfect for the home chef who makes large batches of things. I have a 20 year old 5 qt Kitchenaid that still works perfectly, but can't handle the capacity of many of my recipes...It ends up a big mess of flour or powdered sugar everywhere. I just used this 8qt mixer to make a batch of buttercream frosting which calls for 2 lbs of powdered sugar...Not a bit flew out onto the counter--The bowl had room to contain it all! And, if you watch carefully, the mixer will occasionally go on sale for 25% off! This is the best deal around!

This mixer is so quiet and powerful. I am impressed every time with how easily it kneads heavy doughs. The capacity is considerably larger than the standard in-home KitchenAid Mixers, but the machine itself is configured so it doesn't take up much more space than the standard. I'm very happy with this purchase!

I love my kitchen aid. I love my kitchen aid. I love my kitchen aid. I love my kitchen stand mixer. I love my kitchen aid!

from Kaylees Bakery on

I absolutely LOVE this mixer. I also have a 4qt Kitchenaid mixer but this one takes the cake. It is a real power house. It tackles my MMF with precision and ease! I only wish it had a spill lid like the smaller ones.

from Taylored Creations on

Wow! 1.3 hp is as much as my lawn mower! This can mix just about anything you want. If you don't need a giant floor Hobart then this is perfect.

from the french market on

We compared the features of KitchenAid mixers of 6qt, 7qt and 8qt sizes, decided on the 8qt Model KSM8990WH. After first use, we appreciate its features and details more. Here is why: 1. The 1.3hp motor is the largest among KitchenAid mixers. The fact that only a fraction of the 1.3hp power is delivered to or needed at the mixing shaft means the motor has plenty of reserve power and is ready to deliver upon spiking power demands. This reserve power margin also translates to longer service life of the motor; 2. The 8qt stainless steel bowl handles larger batch runs easily with less chance of a spill. The open handle allows for stacking when needed; 3. All included attachments – spiral dough hook, flat beater and wired whip – are made with stainless steel from head to toe, thus dishwasher safe. They are also NSF certified; 4. During kneading, the steady turning of the shaft and the low humming of motor gears are indications the mixer is handling the job with ease. In all, the 8qt KSM8990WH is a solidly built and well-proportioned unit. Only it did not come with a plastic pouring shield. There is an optional stainless steel guard that looks very restrictive. Luckily we found the plastic pouring shield from KitchenAid 600-series 6qt mixers also fits on the 8qt bowl. Read Less Read More

The classic that is a tank and comes at a great price here at webstaurant store. I use this daily and it has been a lifesaver.

Love this Commercial Mixer, I currently have 3, the Artisan, Professional and now the Commercial. I have always have great luck with both of them, my only complaint was that I could not put my beaters in the dishwasher, NOT with this one. Honestly I had been fantasying about this model however there was logically no reason to justify the cost. I recently made a large batch of meatballs for my freezer, and (luckily I have a sense of humor) meat was flying all over my counter. (I had it on the lowest setting as well.) Later that evening (I assumed I had it all cleaned up) my husband stepped on raw hamburger meat and I had no choice but to explain my embarrassed moment (although I would love to see myself on tape, during the situation) I was using the 6 qt Professional mixer at the time. The next day, I'm all composed making hamburgers to freeze and a big chunk flew out onto the floor. I hated to throw out that much meat with the prices being so high. Well the next day I logged on and saw the larger 8 Qt. bowl Commercial on sale. I couldn't believe my luck, my husband had no problem with the expense after the hamburger squish between his toes. I love my other ones, but I must admit I think this one is gonna be my favorite. (Although I will never part with the other two.) There have been many times in the past that I have been using both simultaneously (making breads and pizza doughs etc...) I wouldn't be surprised if I don't have all 3 going at once here real soon. Love Her, and wouldn't part with her now that she is a part of the family.... Read Less Read More

I do a lot of baking (bread every week-end) and there are so many other things that it can be used for. I have had other KitchenAid stand mixers and have to say they worked extremely well. This machine, however, can do it all with ease. It is the quietest mixer I've ever had not that the noise coming from a running mixer bothers me, but it does demonstrate how well it's made and how strong it is. I have the pasta maker attachment (the one that extrudes) and even with that work out the machine barely, if at all, gets warm. There IS a label on the nose that states that KitchenAid attachments are not approved for commercial use, but that's not an issue for home. The price at the Webstaurant store is exceptional. Check prices elsewhere to find out. Bottom line, well worth the money...

REALLY like this after smoking the motor a bit on my 6 qt model after doubling some bread recipes. This takes it no problem!! It is also noticeably quieter than the 6 qt. It did arrive with a bad whip mixer right out of the box but a toll free call to KitchenAid and they replaced it no problem and at no cost. Also, the price was the very best at the WEBstaurant site! Even better than the cost of smaller models at other places! Great product and great service all around!

This mixer is excellent for commercial use. We opened a small bakery and have a large mixer. This one works well for small batches of bread.

from Crust and Crumb Firebrick Bread on

Recieved this Kitchenaid Mixer on Dec. 5th 2013. Absolutely love it. It is quiet and I love the fact you can use 8 quart size bowl and 5 quart size bowl. Spend the extra amount of money to purchase this mixer because you will find there are times you need a bigger bowl to do larger amounts of what ever it is you make. I use both bowls because I do a lot of icing for cakes. I wish I new about this Kitchenaid 8 quart before, because I purchased a 7 quart Cuisinart(big mistake) it rocked all over my counter(very light weight). You won't be sorry buying this mixer!
