The 4 1/4" to 4 3/8" column diameter is both a practical and aesthetic choice that ensures large or thick tops remain firmly supported at all times; therefore, you can choose from a greater selection of tabletops, which includes some of those heavier options. Within the base column lies a threaded interior column that easily fastens to the spider plate - a pre-drilled, cast-iron plate intended to secure the column to the tabletop.
