Hi folks, I'm Bob Moore, founder of Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods. I first started grinding whole grains into flour over 41 years ago. At that time, brown rice flour was simply not available, even in natural food stores, so i decided to make it myself. It was one of the earliest milling efforts and it became an instant favorite. To this day, we continue to grind Bob's Red Mill brown rice flour on our stone mills and it is still hands-down, one of our most popular products. There's nothing fancy about it - just simple, whole grain goodness.
We start with US #1 medium grain brown rice, grown in northern California. Many of the farmers have been our partners since I first started milling back in 1970s. They are people we trust, who provide us with the very best quality brown rice. We take that whole grain brown rice and turn it into whole grain flour on on quartz stone mills. It is an old world technique that grinds slowly, keeping the flour cool and perfectly incorporates the whole grain. For each pound of grain that goes into the mill, one pound of flour comes out. Nothing is added and nothing it taken away.
That means Bob's Red Mill brown rice flour contains fiber, protein, vitamins, iron, potassium, and many nutrients found in whole grain brown rice.
Brown rice flour has a pleasant, nutty flavor and it is an excellent ingredient for gluten-free baking, breading chicken and fish, or thickening soups, sauces, and gravies. We're always working with expert chefs and bakers to help us create recipes for our products, and our brown rice flour is no exception.
My friend Phyllis Potts is a delightful lady who wrote the wonderful cookbook: the complete guide to wheat free cooking. She developed an amazing gluten free bread recipe using our brown rice flour- called Walrus bread. Thinking back to when i first started milling and the limited number of flours you could find in stores back then, it is nothing short of wondrous to see the great variety of whole grain flours that are available today.
Each dollop of flour is just one more delicious way to bring whole grain nutrition to your family. And brown rice flour is a welcome addition to add an array of healthy options. Look for Bob's Red Mill brown rice flour at your favorite supermarket, natural foods store, or online.
