How to Season a Pan

How to Season a Pan

For a carbon steel pan, start by washing, rinsing, and drying the pan. Heat the pan on your range on medium to high heat, then add shortening to the pan. Use a clean dry towel to spread the shortening around the interior of the pan, creating an even coat. Remove the pan from the heat, wipe out the excess shortening and let it cool. You can repeat this process up to 3 more times. For a cast iron skillet, preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking pan with aluminum foil and set aside. Wash, rinse, and dry your skillet. Place the skillet in the oven for 15 minutes. Remove and coat the entire skillet with shortening, inside and out. Place the skillet in the oven for 45 minutes with the baking pan on a rack below it to catch any mess. You can repeat this process up to three more times.

Customer questions about this product

What's the difference between a riveted and a welded handle?
A riveted handle is connected by small metal pieces (called rivets) that are crushed between the handle and the pan body to attach them together. This type of handle is more common on copper and aluminum cookware.

For a handle to be welded, the metal must first be melted and then adhered to the pan body. This creates a strong bond that leaves little to no space in between, so bacteria and other food crumbs can’t collect and cause sanitation issues. Both are long lasting solutions for fry and sauce pan handles because they are durable and can withstand heat.
My item arrived coated with a thin layer of oil. What is this oil for, and is it ready for immediate use?
Some carbon steel pans and woks are shipped with a protective oil coating from the factory to prevent them from rusting before their first use. They must be thoroughly washed with warm soapy water to remove all traces of the oil, and then properly seasoned before use.

Very thin carbon steel pans. They are very non stick when properly seasoned, but the seasoning process puts off some gnarly fumes and the fans don't feel very substantial.
This french style pan is great. Perfect size and doesn't take up too much space on the stove. Seasons well and heats up quickly. Great price!
I've used these pans at every restaurant I've worked in during my 25 year career. There is no substitute for the performance that these consistently provide. Good for every job from searing steaks to French omlettes. Take care of them and they'll take care of you.
Perfect sized pan for small saute/fry tasks. Fits 1-2 eggs just fine. I also use this for small sauce batches. Easy clean up and super well made pans. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with these..
So, there are some things I like about this pan...and some things I'm not crazy about. I like its heft and balance; it's clearly good construction. I HATE that the handle picks up heat really fast, and that there are water spots on it already just from having boiled water in it and oiled it down.

The French Style 7 7/8” Carbon Steel Fry Pan is a great quality Pan. It is very durable and doesn’t bend or dent easily. It is easy to clean and long lasting. This is great for cooking single sized proportions of meat or eggs.
We've had these in use for two years now and they are still working fantasticly. They are super easy to clean and to season and they heat evenly.
is it a super high end fancy expensive carbon steel pan? no, clearly not, but for the price it's great. as long as you season it properly it will serve you well. it heats up fast but still retains a lot of heat. it's a great pan for what it is.
Not happy with this fry pan at all. Even after I season just like they did in their video it still rusted I even used the lard
Thank you for the review, Randy. We're sorry that this pan is rusting for you! A Customer Solutions Representative will contact you directly.
I own a 8" tri-ply stainless steel skillet but wanted to try a carbon steel, which I never owned. This will now be my go to pan for my over easy fried eggs. After seasoning it's as good as teflon or my cast iron skillets.
This is my "go to" pan in the kitchen for individual/small portion items, especially proteins. It heats up nicely, retains it, gives a great sear to the product, and transitions well to the oven. great product, great price, great value.
All of these carbon steel fry pans are an excellent buy. Durable and surprisingly good looking pans. Very handy for making single servings and things like crepes.
Got these in and seasoned them right away, I am very excited to use them. I have the bigger ones and these pans feel heavier.
we do a ton of our sauté in these quick little pans. great for sauce reductions and you can also sauté and toss them right into the oven.
Great little pan. It is the perfect size to be an egg pan in the morning once you season the pan. I should know that is this pans duty in my kitchen.
Arrived in perfect condition. Perfect size for scrambled eggs! With a good seasoning, and a bit of butter, have no problem with omelets sticking either.
Nice size pan to use when you have that small dish and want to smother all those flavors without having a large pan to take up additional space on the stove.
This was my first carbon steel pan and I love it. I'll buy larger ones soon. The way it cooks and the heat distribution is fantastic. Instantly nonstick when you season it. Not as user friendly for guest cooks but I love the searing and smerimg this pan can do.
