Fletchers' Mill: How to Clean a Salt and Pepper Mill

Fletchers' Mill: How to Clean a Salt and Pepper Mill

Now, I hope you've been using your pepper mill and salt mill quite a bit. If you have, it's possible that it's not working quite as perfectly as when you first bought it. It might need a little bit of a cleaning. I think mine does. I like to push this mechanism, and it's spring loaded. You can open up the nut pretty easily, then. Now remember, this is salt and this is pepper, so when you go to refill, make sure you're only putting salt in the salt. The salt mill has the plastic. You let all of the pepper and salt out of the mill, like that. Don't lose the little nut. So, we just pop it out like that, or you can just push against a magazine, against your stomach, if you have a strong enough stomach. The thing that's cool about this is that Fletchers' Mill is the only pepper mill where you can actually take this whole mechanism out and clean it, which is really fantastic. Not only does it have a lifetime guarantee, but it's just going to stay and it's going to be your favorite pepper mill for the next 25 years. Now, if you don't have a brush, you can just take a napkin, and really, the most important part is right in there. See, on the salt shaker on the plastic mechanism, i can just put that rag in there and wipe that. I just want to make sure that's really good and clean of any of the oil. Keeping this grinding mechanism on the stainless steel shaft really nice and clean. Now, when you go back in, there's a little ring and you want to make sure you put the end of this back through that little ring, okay? You don't want to do it if you've had a couple of drinks. Using two thumbs, push that back in like that, and then you can see that the spring is loaded and it's working perfect. And just hold it with your thumb, put the top back on or refill it again. You see, when you push that in, the little screw on top comes up and it makes it a lot easier to take this nut and put it back on the top. Who's calling you and me a nut? You are a nut, for sure. All right, with that, you're back in business and working better than ever. So, now that you're pepper mill is in tip top shape, I hope you're enjoying it and cooking lots of delicious meals. Let's go over there for dinner. You want to?

Fletchers' Mill: How to Fill a Salt and Pepper Mill

Fletchers' Mill: How to Fill a Salt and Pepper Mill

Hi! Thank you for buying one of these fantastic Fletchers' pepper mills. We love these! You've got to try one. We're going to tell you a little bit about what the differences are between Mary Sue's and mine. So, first you're going to learn how to do is fill them. This is a pepper mill and you'll want to fill it with pepper corns. The way you know that is because the bottom is stainless steel. It has a really high-quality stainless steel mechanism that's guaranteed for life. And this one is a salt mill. Now, you see the "S" on the top? The difference is that, see on the bottom here, this mechanism is plastic because we're actually just going to grind, not with a metal blade, just sort of smash the salt crystals. So, that's how you tell the difference. Now, you never want to put pepper in here. You only want to put salt. And you don't want to put salt in your pepper mill because the salt will corrode the stainless steel. All right, so the first thing you do is take the nut on the top and unscrew it and don't lose it, just set it on the table. See that right there? Open it up. Then, I like to use my hand as a handy-dandy funnel right here, right around the top where I pour the peppercorns in. And I'm taking the salt, and I'm just going to hold the bottom and pour the salt in there, just like that. Put the top right back on and actually turn it until it hooks in. So, just a little bit of a turn and it'll click right in. So then the nut that you're screwing onto the top has sort of a locking mechanism. She's not talking about this nut, she's talking about this nut, okay? Then, you push the spring loaded grinder in until you get it just right. I like it pretty fine, like almost a powder. See right there? Now I'm letting that go. Now, if I want it like Mary Sue or want it a little bit coarser, I do it counter-clockwise, and that makes this mechanism separate and you get a larger grind. Almost like a crack pepper, which is how I love it. I like mine fine, she likes hers coarse. Exactly! That's why we have a pepper mill that makes it either way. And salt mill! Thanks you guys!

Customer questions about this product

How do I adjust the coarseness of the grind on this mill?
The easy-to-grip knob on the mill can be adjusted from fine to extra coarse, allowing you to dispense the desired consistency with ease!
How should I care for my Fletchers' Mill salt or pepper mill?
To clean your mill, unscrew the top nut, remove the top, and empty any remaining salt or pepper from inside the mill. Turn it upside down and pop out the rod by tapping it firmly against a hard surface. Clean it with a dry brush or cloth and push the rod back in from the bottom, making sure it goes through the grinder ring and pops into place. Fill the mill with salt or pepper and place the top back on, ensuring that the metal key clicks on the rod. Screw on the top nut while pushing on the rod so that it is flush with the bottom of the grinding mechanism. Adjust the grinding consistency by tightening or loosening the top nut.

Please be advised that you should not use alcohol, strong detergents, abrasives, or any kind of solvents to clean the mill. Furthermore, do not immerse the mills in water or place them in a dishwasher. Water or moisture can damage the finish and affect the performance of your mill.
Will this item look exactly like the one that's pictured?
This item is either made of wood or designed to mimic the look of natural wood. Because of the natural differences in wood, no two items will look exactly the same. Each item is designed from, or to look like, the same type of wood, but each will have its own unique appearance and wood-grain.
What is the benefit of using a dedicated salt mill versus putting salt in a pepper mill?
Since salt is a corrosive mineral, using salt in a pepper mill may lead to corrosion of the internal grinding mechanism. Salt mills are specifically designed with ceramic or nylon mechanisms to avoid corrosion.
