How can I safely stop my USB device if the "remove hardware" feature isn't working?

This feature may not be working if the drive contains an NTFS partition and indexing is enabled. Or if you're using a third party software (like antivirus or spyware) that is still accessing the drive. Check for indexing in Windows 20000 and XP only, browse "My Computer" and right-click on the drive letter assigned. Select properties and then find the "allow indexing" option under the general tab. Then uncheck it. If this problem still persists, shutting down your computer first will safely stop the hard drive. Then you can unplug the drive from your computer.

Why do I keep receiving an error when copying a file larger than 4 GB or when I back up the drive?

You will receive this message if the drive is formatted to FAT32, which has a file size limitation of 4 GB. You may also see it when backing up to the hard drive using backup software. To fix this issue, you will need to format the drive to NTFS. Make sure to backup any data prior to changing the formatting of the hard drive, as this process will erase all existing data on the drive. Please note that if you are using Windows ME or 98SE, you will not be able to run NTFS.
