How to Use a Rice Cooker

How to Use a Rice Cooker

Looking to cook rice quickly and consistently? Does your rice cook uneven or stick to your pots and pans? Well, look no further! With our wide selection of cookers, warmers, combination cooker/warmers, and sushi rice containers, you’ll have no trouble finding the right unit to suit your needs. Plus, we have accessories that can make using your rice cooker even easier. This video will show you step-by-step instructions on how to cook rice in our Panasonic 23-cup rice cooker. Rice cookers can be used to cook all types of rice, including but not limited; white, brown, parboiled or rice in the husk, Indian-style such as basmati or jasmine and quinoa. We offer a great selection of rice and rice cooking accessories. Cooking rice in your rice cooker is easy and consistent. Follow these simple steps and tips for the perfect steamed rice every time! The first step when using a rice cooker is to measure the correct amount of rice into a bowl. If your recipe calls for standard U.S. cups, you will want to adjust your measurements accordingly, but otherwise, you should use the rice cup that came with your rice cooker. This measuring cup is based on a Chinese cup measurement and is equal to about 3/4 of a standard U.S. cup measurement. For most types of rice, the second step is to thoroughly rinse the grains until the water runs clear. The purpose of rinsing is to remove any pesticides that may be present, give your rice a more consistent texture, and lessen the chance that your rice cooker will bubble over. Do note that while rinsing your rice is generally the rule, it’s important to read the packaging. Some rice comes enriched with water-soluble vitamins and minerals such as iron or thiamin that will dissolve if it is washed prior to cooking. After rinsing, transfer the rice from the bowl to the inner pan of your rice cooker. Before transferring the rice, you might want to line the pan with one of our reusable rice napkins as they can greatly reduce cleanup time and maximize water drainage for fluffier cooked rice. The next step is to add water to the pan using the same measuring cup you used to measure the rice. Many rice cookers come with graduated marks on the inner pan indicating how much rice and water should be added. However, the general rule in U.S. standard cups is to add 1 ½ cups of water per 1 cup of rice, or in the case of unwashed rice, 2 cups of water per 1 cup of rice. This can vary based on the type of rice you’re cooking and how moist you prefer it, so for more specific measurements, check out the chart in our rice cooker buying guide. Place the inner pan in the cooker. At this point, some people will let their rice soak for 30 minutes. You can also add a bit of butter, salt, oil, or even bay leaves or cardamom pods to your cooker to enhance the flavor of your rice. Once the inner pan is in place, plug in your rice cooker. Press the switch to turn it on. Generally, there will be a light on the front of the unit that turns on when cooking is in progress. While your rice is cooking, do not remove the lid as this may cause your rice to dry out. When this particular unit is finished cooking, the switch will pop up and the light on the front of the unit will go out. At this point, you should let your rice rest inside the cooker for at least 15 minutes in keep-warm mode. This will allow your rice to finish cooking and stabilize the water level so that excess moisture steams out of your rice. After 15 minutes, your rice is ready to be served and you can unplug your cooker! Since the inner pan is made of a non-stick material, it’s best to use plastic serving utensils when serving your rice. Try one of our rice ladles that are designed specifically for use with rice and rice cooking equipment! If you used a rice napkin, cleanup takes no more than a minute. If not, you can soak the inner pan in hot water to loosen cooked-on rice, and then clean it with a non-metal brush or sponge. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t use abrasive cleaners or steel wool on the pan because you will ruin its non-stick surface. And that’s it! Now you know how easy it is to cook rice in a rice cooker. As always, thanks for watching, and if you have questions, feel free to use our live chat button.

Customer questions about this product

What's the difference between rice cookers and rice warmers?
Rice cookers are exclusively meant to cook rice, and they tend to be smaller than rice warmers. Rice warmers are meant to keep cooked rice at foodsafe holding and serving temperatures for a period of time. Rice cookers / warmers are capable of both functions.
How can I best maintain the non-stick qualities of this item?
To prevent food from sticking to your non-stick surface, we recommend lightly coating it with oil, wiping off any excess with a soft cloth or napkin. Using sprays on non-stick coatings can actually cause food to stick more readily than using a fat or oil. Sprays can leave a glue-like coating, often missed during the cleaning process, which will begin to build up and cause foods to stick. Additionally, metal utensils and abrasive cleaners should not be used with non-stick surfaces to prevent scratching and damaging the coated surface.
What's the ideal ratio of rice to water to use in this rice cooker?
Different types of rice require different ratios of rice and water in order to cook properly. Check out our Rice Cooker Buying Guide for information on cooking white rice, brown rice, quinoa, and more!

This rice cooker cooks the rice awesome and it's great when it works. We have had several issues where it will stop working and have had to order two more through the manufacturer who have not been able to diagnose the issue. Hopefully the third one is the charm.

from ShuBrew on

Worked once then stopped. I bought this to replace a much cheaper one, but now am forced to use the old cheap one. Sitting in the box, what a waste of money.

I highly recommend this rice cooker. Our restaurant is particular about rice (it is not an afterthought for us), and this does the job quickly and makes [sticky] rice incredibly well. Performs similar to a Zojirushi and other Asian branded rice cookers. The trick is not to fill your rice up to the top - this creates mushy rice at the bottom of the pan. We fill and cook ours only halfway with only 0.25" water. This is so quick that we ended up ordering 2 more for our establishment. Only negative thing is shipping can be delayed.

from BB GT on

Love this rice cooker! Works quickly and makes the best sticky rice!! I’ve used other brands and nothing compares or even comes close to this rice cooker!!

from Jason Seto on

We love the Proctor Silex 37540 40 Cup Rice Cooker. It quickly cooks rice perfectly. We have also discovered that you can make mac and cheese in it, also!

from Wild West Fiesta on

Love this rice cooker! Whenever we have a big party, we always pull this out and make a big batch of rice. It is so easy to use and makes perfect rice each time!

on

This rice cooker is so simple that anyone could make white rice as a professional. Iy aldo can make spanish rice and sticky rice. Very versital unit.

from Last Chance Food Shack on

I don't think this could really cook 20 cups of raw rice. The most I can do is 11 cups. I use brown rice which maybe is different for some reason? Or maybe they're talking about the weird measuring cup that comes with rice cookers that doesn't actually measure cups for some reason. Aside from the fact that I was hoping it would be slightly bigger, it has lasted longer than any other rice cooker I've ever used.

on

This worked well while it lasted, but didn't last very long. It began only cooking the rice here and there, we never knew if it was going to actually cook the rice or not. We called Webstaurant and they got us in touch with the company and they sent a new one for free. But that one encountered the same problems within months as well. We bought a gas rice cooker since and love it so much more.

Ok shipping of the product was fast and timely but my problem is with the functionality of it. I had a rice cooker /warmer that would keep rice on warm for a week without rice going bad but not this cooker . It keeps water in the bottom of the cooker no way for the rice to vent or keep rice dry and fresh. After a day rice begins to smell. Waste of my money. Save your money and buy a more expensive one that actually works for keeping rice longer hours . It also came with a dent.

We have had several different rice cookers through the last few years, There have been good ones and bad ones. This was one of the better ones. Worked fine for us.

from Mesa Grande Taqueria on

We use this for both sushi rice and brown rice and it tends to cook things unevenly and inconsistently compared to the 60 cup cooker I'd recommend purchasing over this one. It seems like the smaller the batch, the better the rice comes out.

on

Our old rice cooker broke so I decided to order one from here. it is perfect size for small restaurant, it cooks rice well and keep it warm all day. it is easy to clean, it looks nice as well. I got it when it was on sale so I was even happier than when I found it here. thank you

on

The rice cooker is a good product however it was very big and we need something that is going to save space since we have a small kitchen

on

This is a good help on cooking brown rice. Not too big, and not too small. It is just right equipment for lunch rush. Decent price too.

from Yummy Bowl on

This rice cooker is top notch! Steams the rice extremely well without drying it out and can hold a lot. It will also let you know when the rice has been cooked to a normal range (can also tell by water level)
