Labor-Saving Auto Defrost System
This merchandiser uses an auto defrost refrigeration system with R290 refrigerant. Compared to a cold wall unit, it trades a little bit of interior capacity for the convenience of not having to shut the unit down and clean it out during defrost cycles. Condensation is continually removed before it can freeze, thanks to the fan and air channels built into the walls. Better airflow means it will recover faster from open doors, too.
Indoor Installation
This unit is designed to be installed indoors and features a glass door design and interior LED lighting that work together to highlight your ice and make it more visible.
Max-Life Gasket
The gasket is made from durable Santoprene, which provides superior durability over other gasket materials. This gives you better temperature retention for longer.
Dependable, Iconic Design
The steel cabinet uses water-tight, offset seams for optimal strength and a 2-part acrylic polyurethane coating for better resistance to corrosion, adhesion, and humidity. It also provides it with a smooth, mid-range gloss finish. And since it comes with Leer’s iconic snow-capped “ICE” signage, you can be sure that customers will take notice!
Superior Temperature Control
2 1/2” thick insulation on the ceiling and walls and 3” thick insulation on the floor provide maximum temperature retention. This helps to keep your ice frozen and ready for purchase, while also reducing the strain on the refrigeration system for more efficient operation. And thanks to its electronic control system, you can easily monitor the unit and make changes as necessary.
Customer Q&AAsk a Question
In a cold wall refrigeration system, or coil cooled system, a series of copper wires runs through the walls of the merchandiser. These copper wires radiate cold air into the cabinet in order to keep the ice cold. This causes condensation to occur on the walls of cold wall merchandisers, meaning they will need to be defrosted and cleaned regularly.
In an auto defrost refrigeration system, or forced air system, cold air is pumped into the cabinet using fans, which keeps your ice cold. This type of refrigeration system cuts down on the amount of condensation that forms inside the merchandiser, and the condensation that does form in the unit is removed by an automatic condensation evaporator system.
Leer Indoor Ice Merchandiser
Take a tour inside and out of Leer's outstanding indoor ice merchandisers, designed with the highest standards of quality to completely withstand the elements and provide you with flawless performance.
Today, I'll be doing an overview of Leer's indoor ice merchandisers. I'll break down the construction as well as highlight the main features and benefits of the merchandisers. Our indoor and outdoor merchandisers are very similar. For a comparison, check out Leer's video library to see an overview on the outdoor units.
We manufacture a wide variety of merchandiser sizes with interior capacities ranging from 20 cu. ft. all the way to 155 cu. ft.. Most of these merchandisers are available in either cold wall or auto defrost configurations. Let's get started with the merchandiser construction, and then we'll work our way from the outside in.
The merchandiser is essentially a box within a box. There's a steel inner liner and a steel outer shell. In between, the two layers contain the foam insulation. There is 2 1/2" of insulation in the ceiling and walls and 3" of insulation in the floor. The insulation is a CFC-free, foamed-in-place polyurethane. This ensures a high R-value, or in other words reduces heat transfer into the unit.
In cold wall applications, the copper refrigeration tubing is pin-welded right onto the inner liner so that the cold temperature radiates across the entire surface area of the unit. Once foamed, this steel is primed and painted to provide superior resistance to humidity, corrosion, and other weather conditions.
The merchandiser's offset seams are precision-formed, resulting in water-tight, lock-form seams that create a stronger and more durable merchandiser. This increases longevity and produces a professional, high-end looking product. Now let's continue working our way around the unit.
The first thing to note are the patented, iconic red ice decals and the snow-capped detailing around the lettering. They are a staple of the packaged ice industry and Leer's unique signature trademark that you can't get anywhere else. The merchandisers are manufactured in the United States in small-town Wisconsin.
The electronic control offers a wide array of benefits over the standard mechanical controls. The most basic benefits are the digital display and the ability to adjust parameters. The parameters are optimized and pre-set in our facilities, but for special circumstances you can adjust them manually. Using the electronic control, any frost that may build up on the evaporator will be melted during defrost and drained into the condensate evaporator pan. The pan is heated to help dissipate the water discharge from the coil during defrost.
The compressors range for 1/3 to 3/4 HP depending on the size of the unit. Due to EPA requirements, Leer actively pursues alternate and compliant refrigerants and techniques. Our website will have the most up-to-date information. Standard on indoor units, the compressor is enclosed by a wrap-around full top cover. The bottom of the merchandiser features PVC skid plates.
Now onto the front of the unit. The large glass doors are houses in a durable, lightweight aluminum frame. The glass is premium argon-filled, insulated tempered glass. The argon insulation provides the unit with a better U-value, which is essentially the efficiency in which it reduces solar heat transfer.
Our gaskets are some of the best in the industry for several reasons:
- Following the most recent redesign, the gasket profile has shown roughly a 37% increase in insulative properties.
- The extra layers and magnetic strip provide tighter insulation around the doors, reducing the amount of cold air leaving, and hot air entering the box, making it more energy-efficient and keeping your ice in better condition.
- The extra air chamber also reduces condensation and sweating
- Lastly, the gaskets are made from santoprene, which has more than double the life expectancy of PVC and is designed to withstand harsh outdoor climates, which greatly improves the sealing performance and durability of the gasket.
The spring-assisted hinges are adjustable to ensure a lifetime of level and solid, sealing doors. The spring also helps the door close securely and helps avoid the door being left open accidentally. The perimeter of the door frame features a high-impact PVC breaker strip that is durable enough to withstand excessive wear-and-tear.
Moving inside the unit, on auto defrost units the drop-down fan and drain pan assembly allow for ease of service. The standard LED lights illuminate the box and make the ice more visible. The interior steel walls are pre-painted white. Auto defrost units will have air ducts that are designed to optimize airflow. All units will have an egg-carton flooring. Together, these two features help maintain the quality of the ice.
The drain plug is recessed for easier and more complete water drainage, if ever needed. The merchandiser requires a 115V single phase outlet. The amp draw range is between 6 and 13 depending on what unit you have and cold wall vs. auto defrost. The interior lighting system plugs into the compressor, whereas the condensate evaporator pan for auto defrost units require their own plug. UL certification requires all models larger than the model 100 to use a 20 amp plug. We offer many options in customization, such as custom paint and diamond tread. Standard units are CE and UL certified, and they meet all DOE requirements, with NSF boxes available upon request.
We stand behind our product. The standard warranty is 5 years for the compressor, 1 year for parts, and 90 days for labor. We have a stringent quality control program to ensure that when our merchandisers arrive at your facility, your out-of-box experience will be flawless. We're with you every degree of the way, so let us know if there's anything we can do for you. Please visit our complete video library on leerinc.com, or contact us at 800-766-5337.
