What is the difference between a shaker and a dredge?

A dredge is typically used to dispense flour. When dredging chicken, for example, you can use a dredge to apply the flour and/or breadcrumbs. This can reduce waste and reduce risk of cross-contamination. A shaker is a multipurpose dispenser. Uses include applying salt & pepper or other seasonings, sprinkling nutmeg or cinnamon over coffees and desserts, applying a dry rub to cuts of meat, or adding cheese to a dish. Many shakers have color-coded lids to prevent cross-contamination and easily identify usage. Both a shaker or dredge can be used to safely apply flour and other dry ingredients while food is cooking. Be sure to choose the correct hole diameter for your intended use.

What type of dredge or shaker should I get?
