What is the difference between a shaker and a dredge?

A dredge is typically used to dispense flour. When dredging chicken, for example, you can use a dredge to apply the flour and/or breadcrumbs. This can reduce waste and reduce risk of cross-contamination. A shaker is a multipurpose dispenser. Uses include applying salt & pepper or other seasonings, sprinkling nutmeg or cinnamon over coffees and desserts, applying a dry rub to cuts of meat, or adding cheese to a dish. Many shakers have color-coded lids to prevent cross-contamination and easily identify usage. Both a shaker or dredge can be used to safely apply flour and other dry ingredients while food is cooking.
