How to Use a Cake Leveler

How to Use a Cake Leveler

Hi! I'm Emily Tatak from the Wilton Test Kitchen. Today, I'm here to show you how easy it is to level and torte your cakes. When a cake bakes, it sometimes develops a dome top, also known as a crown. By removing the crown, and leveling your cake, you're creating a flat surface, perfect for decorating. Leveling is crucial because it prevents cracking when stacking and filling your layers. There are two ways to level and torte your cakes. You can use a serrated knife or a cake leveler. To begin, securely attach your cake to a cake board with a small amount of icing - just like this. This is crucial because this prevents your cake from moving around while you're leveling. If you're using a cake leveler, you first want to place your cake on a flat surface. Place the leveler next to your cake, so you can see how high to set your wire. You want to remove as little cake as possible, while creating a flat surface. There are notches all they down the side of the leveler, numbered 1-9 for easy adjustments. In this instance, I'm using a number 2. So, using a gentle sawing motion, I'm going to cut through just the top of my cake, and remove the crown. I like using a cake leveler because it creates an even and straight cut, every time. This leveler can be used on any cake, round or square, up to 10 inches, or even a 9 by 13 cake. If you're using a serrated knife, place your cake on a turntable. While slowly rotating your turntable, use a gentle sawing motion to remove the crown. From here, you can leave your cake "as is" or you can cut it into multiple layers, called torting. Torting adds height and gives you the opportunity to add additional filling to your cake. If you're using a leveler, place your cake on a flat surface. Re-position the wire, so it lines up right in the middle of your cake. In this instance, it's about a number 7. Using a gentle sawing motion, I'm going to cut right through the center of my cake, giving me two equal-height layers. Carefully remove the top layer of my cake with a cake board to prevent cracking and breaking. If you are using a serrated knife, place your cake on a turntable. Position your knife in the middle of the cake, keeping it level. Place one hand on top of the cake and, using a gentle sawing motion, cut horizontally through the cake, while rotating the turntable. As you can see, I now have two even layers, ready to fill and stack. For more tips, techniques, and inspiration, visit Wilton.com.

cake leveler cakes Wire cut knife level easy great layers

I seriously don't know what I would do without this leveler. I've had the same exact leveler since the beginning (which has been 5 years). It has leveled 100's of cakes perfectly each and every time. :)

Cake leveler gets the job due every time

This leveler is inexpensive, and will do its job, but it is not without its issues. It is completely unusable for cakes with firmer crusts. Even if you start the cut with a knife, it just won't go through. Another issue is that even at its lowest setting, The wire is too high to use it to cut layers from a cake. If you just want to top a soft crumbed cake, this will work just fine. If you want anything else, you'll need to choose something else.

The wire cake leveler makes cutting cakes very easy. It cuts evenly with one stroke. You can easily adjust the height of the leveler. I definitely would recommend this product

this was one of my favorite baking accessories. It makes slicing a cake into layers a whole lot easier then using a bread knife. this is a must have for any cake maker

This helps me make the cake to be sure i am staying on track. Sometimes I don't even use it. It's not a necessity for me but to each his own

Simple Wire cake leveler this is a must have for anyone making cakes. While baking your cake it will not always come out perfect for applying icing or fondant and this will make sure you can make a nice smooth surface to work with.

This is a fine, inexpensive cake leveler. If you line up the notches perfectly and keep it steady, it does a decent job of leveling cakes. The wire cuts pretty well. The price is right if you just need to do a simple level job but if you frequently make cakes, it might be better to invest in a more solid leveler.

Nice wire cake leveler. Offers a nice flat smooth cut. The price was amazing and the product is great. It should last a long time

This one rivals it's more expensive counterparts. It's versatile. You can cut using it up and down as in the sawing motion or just turn it sideways and slice through your cake.

This Wilton cake level is just ok, not very sturdy but work well for homemade bake sale ( not use a lot) And the price is unbeatable.

This is an OK leveler. It does the job if the cake is very soft, which most of the time cake will be. I used this on a cake that had a little hard crust on the top and It broke the leveler. So as long as the cake is really soft, it does good.

i always make a mess when cutting cake two layers but his one make it a perfect and even two layers cake, thank alot , great

This is a decent basic leveler. It's only 10" so you can't level the larger cakes with it. I'd say it's more for occasional use. I have a heavy duty leveler for my business, but for small jobs, this gets it done. The wire is surprisingly sturdy and has not broken, and it's easy to slide up or down to the appropriate notch/height.

I received my cake lever a couple months ago. I was waiting a bit to see if it would brake on me before making a good review. But its working great I would just say that the manufacter could make makers before. Like that I can cut thin cakes. But other than that its great

I used to cut every cake with a knife and I would occasionally find myself cutting at an angle. Since I started using this, it has helped me keep a perfidy straight line.

SO MAD I ordered this. I have wanted to buy a cake leveler for a long time and finally did and am so disappointed. I could never even use it because it came out of the box with the wire snapped. Obviously the quality wasn't good enough for it to even survive the shipping in one piece
