I haven’t heard of R-290, R-600a, R-513a, or R-448A refrigerant before. What is it?
R-290 (also known as high purity propane or CARE 40) and R-600a (also known as refrigerant grade Isobutane or CARE 10) are hydrocarbon refrigerants. R513a (also known as Opteon XP10) and R-448A (also known as Solstice N40) are HFO (hydrofluoroolefin) refrigerants. They are being used by some manufacturers in response to the EPA’s Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Program.
The biggest difference between cold wall and auto defrost refrigeration is the amount of condensation created during the cooling process.

In a cold wall refrigeration system, or coil cooled system, a series of copper wires runs through the walls of the merchandiser. These copper wires radiate cold air into the cabinet in order to keep the ice cold. This causes condensation to occur on the walls of cold wall merchandisers, meaning they will need to be defrosted and cleaned regularly.

In an auto defrost refrigeration system, or forced air system, cold air is pumped into the cabinet using fans, which keeps your ice cold. This type of refrigeration system cuts down on the amount of condensation that forms inside the merchandiser, and the condensation that does form in the unit is removed by an automatic condensation evaporator system.

We purchased a Leer outdoor ice merchandiser for a new construction convenience store project.The freezer was stored in a conex untill needed.Upon startup the freezer would not cool.The unit was 10 days past it's 90 day labor warranty and Leer declined to offer any leeway or help on this DOA freezer.Did not receive a call back from customer service as promised.Problem was a refrigerant leak, had to pay a contractor to travel to a remote location to repair unit.We had purchased a couple of these merchandisers in the past but now cannot recommend due to limited/lack of warranty support for a brand new piece of equipment.
