Ateco Piping Bags, Short Spatulas and Pastry Tubes

Hi, this is Julie Bashore from the Sugar Arts Institute. Let’s have fun with some of the Ateco piping tips. Working with their disposable piping bags that come on a roll, they tear off really easily, I like to work with the smaller 12” bags but they also have 18”. Working with a coupler, remove the nut from the base of the coupler and place the base in the bag as tightly as you possibly can. Working with a pair of scissors, above the screw marks, just cut the edge of the bag and remove that. And then you’re going to choose the piping tube that you’d like to work with, place it on the top of the coupler, and screw it down firmly. This is a piping bag stand; it’s very convenient, especially if you’re piping alone or you don’t want to interrupt anyone to fill the bags, it holds the bags really well and you can slip your icing in there. This is the short-ended Ateco spatula which is quite wide so it’s really convenient for picking up the buttercream. Pull the bag up, place it on the table, and spread the buttercream down to the end. And then of course it’s important not to forget to burp the bag. This piping tip that I’m using is a ruffling pipe piping tip, and it’s absolutely amazing how quickly it works. Have a look, come in close. Doesn’t that give an awesome ruffle? Let’s work with another tip. This is the shell tip; don’t forget to burp your bag. This is great for a border; in fact, I sometimes use it on the edge of my ruffle. It gives a really nice shell design. The tip itself is curved so it gives a nice puffy shell appearance to it. Ateco has a new set that they’ve brought out: polycarbonate plastic piping tips, they are large tips, very strong and very precise in the edging. This one is a basket weave design; it really makes an awesome border. Place the bag over the holder, again, don’t forget to push the butter cream all the way to the edge and burp the bag. It has two edges, a flat edge and a scalloped edge so this makes a great ribbon design; you can also wiggle it or make just a ribbon and also wiggle this. Flip it over and wiggle. Great for basket weave.

Hello, my name is Julie Bashore and I'm the founder of the Sugar Arts Institute. And I'm here today to show you some of the favorite tools that I work with, manufactured by Ateco. The quality of their tools are absolutely awesome. To start off with, this turntable is very, very sturdy. It doesn't move on the table. It doesn't tip if you have a heavy cake on there. And it comes with a non-slip mat, which I like to use because it prevents the cake from slipping off the turntable. You can place your cake on there and work with it and it's not going to move. It turns really easily, I just love this turntable. To cover my cake with frosting, I'm going to be working with the Ateco short spatula. They are stainless steel spatulas. This one is a little bit wider so that you can collect your buttercream on the top of it and very evenly spread this around the cake. It holds the buttercream well. It's nice and wide so it doesn't fall off the cake. Once I have my buttercream placed on the cake, in order to smooth it out, I'm going to be working with my bench scraper. But before I go onto that, I'm going to show you a spatula that is also stainless steel. This is ideal for people who are tall. I'm rather short, so I prefer the short spatula, but this one, if you're tall, it really works well. And in addition, helps smooth the top of the cakes. The bench scraper is my preference for smoothing the buttercream around the side. It has a nice strong handle and I can actually grip it with my fingers, which helps me balance it. Holding it on the side here, at a 45 degree angle, I turn the turntable around and by working with the bench scraper I can actually see where I'm going with the buttercream. So spread it around, the turntable is turning nice and smoothly. And I'm going to remove all the excess buttercream and place it back into the bowl. And then for the top, you can use this tall spatula. But actually, again my preference is to work an off-set spatula. What I like about this one, it is great because it has some depth here, so I don't get my knuckles into the cake. And I can actually use this to smooth the edges of the cake. This way, my knuckles are kept a distance from the cake, so that I'm not scraping them into the buttercream. It's very comfortable to handle, it's not heavy at all. It has a little bit of give to it, which makes it a little easier to spread. Then once I'm done with that, I'm going to go back to my bench scraper and neaten off those edges. With this, you don't really need to move your arms at all. You just keep the bench scraper at a 45 degree angle. And then go back with the spatula and clean off your edges. And there you go; my cake is almost ready to have the fondant placed on top. Awesome tools!

These are great items that are very durable and last a long time. We would definitely recommend them and they are at a great price.


This is hands down one of my favorite kitchen utensils. It's so useful for a wide variety of things. I use it to flip foods when roasting, smooth out cake batters, smooth spots when decorating cakes, add flourishes to frostings and so forth. This is actually my second one as I decided I needed more than one as I was using it so much.


I'm not an expert cake baker, but I was recently intrigued by the mini layer cakes I saw around. This is just the right size for a mini cake, fine enough for more detailed work, and sturdy enough to do anything you want. Plus, they are so cute!


I only use ateco brand for all my baked goods these products never disappoint and they always work so well I’ve tried others and they’re just not as great as these don’t hesitate to buy so worth it.


Love these Ateco spatulas, this offset one is my absolute favorite, and I decorate cakes every single day. they are sturdy enough for everyday use. I have several in my bakery so that I can always have one on hand and ready for use. I highly recommend this item.

Been using these off set baking spatulas for years. Nothing bad to say about them. They are sturdy and consistent and perfect size. I have 5 of these at our cafe and 2 at home. Definitely worth getting a few to keep in rotation as they are small enough they don't take up much space.

I love this tool. I use it a lot las year, is very useful. I have been using it for a year now and it still like new.


I prefer these black handle spatulas instead of the wood ones as I feel they have a little more ‘give’ or flexibility to them. They are lightweight and easy to handle.


Perfect size for touch-ups and more delicate endeavors. Very durable. It has been in the dishwasher hundreds of times in looks as good as the day it was purchased


I'm a fan of all the Ateco products for my baking needs. The offset spatula is useful for small icing projects including mixing and smoothing. The handle is nice and smooth.

Great little spatula for chocolate work. I use to scrape chocolate off my wide chocolate scraper, it's perfect with the plastic handle and the price is right

Great tool for putting icing onto cakes and cupcakes. I use it for adding buttercream to spots that need a little extra before smoothing out the top layer of frosting on cakes. Can't live without it!

I used to use butter knives to frost things but man oh man am I glad I got these. They're very light weight and the handle is very comfortable. I frosted over 100 cookies with these and they really smoothed the icing well.
