I initially had my eye on some more designer-type woks. I wanted a wooden handle. I wanted a bit more of a refined wok. Then I remembered: I've been to China! Those guys are definitely not cooking on anything fancy. I am positive there is a Chinaman right now, cooking on a wok he fashioned from the hood of an old car. So anything basic will do. This wok is no-frills, but clearly gets the job done. My one gripe is the factory-applied oil that needs to be burned off prior to seasoning. It is difficult to remove this completely - it took me about fifteen minutes of holding it at odd angles over my flame. Possibly this could be handled by baking the wok in a hot oven, but the instructions that came with the wok said to burn it off, so that's what I did. When I made my first attempt at seasoning the wok (with shortening), you could clearly see the areas where the factory oil had not burned off. Overall, it's a sturdy, affordable wok.
