What is a Wet Dry Vacuum?

What is a Wet Dry Vacuum?

At Workshop, we're occasionally asked what a wet / dry vac is and how it works. A wet / dry vac is an essential tool in the home and garage and is often considered a vac for the shop professional. This is mostly due to the versatility that the vacuum provides, allowing for cleaning larger debris and wet messes. Broken down to the most basic elements, the wet / dry vac is a highly flexible vacuum cleaner that works well in many environments. Safely located inside the vac, the motor drives the fan that draws air through the most familiar end to the user, the hose. As the air passes into the hose, it increases in speed and creates suction allowing the vac the pick up particles, debris, or liquid. As the air enters the larger chamber, the air slows down and the debris is released. The size of this drum reflects the volume available for liquid or debris collection. The air is then pulled through the filter. Filters for most vacs come in multiple levels of filtration. Some capture standard debris or fine particles such as drywall dust. Others are specifically designed for water. The filter is fastened to a cage which contains the float. When the user is picking up a high volume of water, the float is designed to raise with the water level and let a user know to shut off the vac by restricting air flow, reducing performance, and changing pitch. The filter and cage is attached to a lid that securely latches to the drum, and when in use, it seals, preventing debris from escaping. The fan pulling the air throw the filter is driven by the motor that is located on the other side of the lid to keep it protected from the liquid and debris. The air is then vented out through a blowing port, usually located on the upper portion of the vacuum. Finishing the main components is the motor cover, which is the shroud over the motor. As you can see, a wet / dry vac is a vacuum that when properly used, can safely and efficiently pick up wet and dry debris.

Why Use a Wet Dry Vacuum?

Why Use a Wet Dry Vacuum?

Pardon me, you're in my house. Hey, you're that guy that lives in the closet. I'm sorry, and you are? I'm the guy from the garage. I take care of the big messes. You seem to be misguided. I do the clean up if it's around here. Calm down, I'm just around for the major messes, you know? I don't know. I do know what I do, what do you think made all those marvelous straight lines in the carpet? When it comes to straight lines, you have no parallel. I came in after that and took care of some of the spots you missed, like that area where the carpet meets the baseboard, where stuff gets trapped and is really hard to reach. Well, if that's all, then there were the cobwebs in the window above the stairs, uh no, I don't like heights. Never cared much for stairs. Gracious! You must be an acrobat. And then the mudroom floor. I nearly choked to death in the mudroom once. Awful! Disgusting! Big, ugly mess. Now, forgive me for prying, how on earth did you manage that dirty mess in the mudroom? Unlike you, I don't have a brush roll or beater bar. I just have this amazing sucking power. Pretty much anything that will fit through here, wet or dry, I just suck it up. Did you say, wet? You weren't made to retrieve wet, even damp can give us fits. No offense little buddy, but you've been in that closet for a little too long. I'm a wet dry vac! Wet, dry, doesn't matter. Suck it up, get it done! That's what I'm all about. Yeah, right, don't call me little buddy. But still, are you the same fella the humans brought in when the washing machine flooded a few weeks ago? Yeah, that's me alright. And the bathroom remodel? Guilty! And you say you live in the garage? I love the way you say garage. Why? Yeah, so, I clean up there, the car, the shop, even blow off the deck. I can see how you could be of service to the humans, and, it appears, protect me from the uh, awful, disgusting big ugly messes? Exactly. It's what I was made for! Oh, oh, looks like it's time to get back in the closet. Don't worry little buddy, I got your back.
