Rotary Food Mills

Rotary Food Mills

Have you ever wanted to puree fruits or vegetables, but you didn’t want to have to drag out the big food processor or have to clean it up later? Not to mention, a food processor is going to leave you with all the skins and all the seeds too. Well, there’s a highly portable and very inexpensive solution to these problems and one that not only purees your fruits and vegetables but also takes out all the skins and seeds. Hi, I’m Steve Ziegler, Product Expert at the WEBstaurantstore. A food mill is a tool of choice for folks who have to make purees often but you can also use it for making things like mashed potatoes, applesauce or even spaetzle. We have several different units available from our 2lb Choice Food Mill to our Heavy Duty 10lb Rotary Food Mill; this is great for high volume applications. Now all of these units work in a very similar fashion so today I’m going to teach you how to use these using our newest, our most popular and our least expensive model, the Choice 2lb Food Mill. Now, the perforated disks that come with this unit have a slight conical shape and you’re going to want them pointing upwards. We’re going to go ahead and drop this in the bowl right like so. You’ll see there’s a hole right there and your pusher has a little pin there and you’re going to want to insert that pin into the hole. And from there what you’ll do is, you see this part right here has holes in it, and I’m going to put one into the hooks and then you’ll feel the springs in this unit when you put the other one in the hook and there you have it, now we have the unit put together. Now whether you’re going to make marinara or barbecue sauce, you of course need to puree your tomatoes. First, I’m going to start and show you some whole peeled tomatoes from a can. We sell these on the WEBstaurantstore and we have great pricing so check them out in our consumables area. I’m going to place some of these into the mill. Now, these are already peeled but they still have their seeds in there, so we’re going to see if we can puree these tomatoes and also remove the seeds. So, I’m just going to go ahead and start milling these tomatoes. Now that we’re about done you can see we are left with the seeds and some of the harder pulp and down below we have a beautiful tomato puree that we can cook down to make our marinara or our barbecue sauce or whatever sauce it is that we’re making. Now from here, let’s go ahead and use some tomatoes that still have their skins on them and see how we do with those. Ok, now that we’ve done whole peeled tomatoes from can, let’s use some fresh tomatoes. Now these, I bought yesterday and I cooked this morning and they still have their skins on along with all their seeds so we’re going to process these and see how this works in order to make a sauce and also remove most of the skin. So I’m going to go ahead and just start milling again. Ok, now I’m just about finished here and you can see this is where a food mill really earns it keep. Besides taking out all the seeds, we got all of the skins off our fresh tomatoes without any extra work and what we’re left with down here is a beautiful tomato puree. Now let’s use our Choice 2lb Food Mill to make some mashed potatoes. Now, why would you want to make some mashed potatoes in a food mill? Well, that’s because if you make mashed potatoes using a mixer you’re going to end up with very gluey potatoes. It’s the same reason why people use ricers, you want nice fluffy mashed potatoes, so I’m going to fill up my hopper here and I’m going to go ahead and start milling these mashed potatoes. Ok, now that we’re just about done, we can take a look underneath and you can see what we have are beautiful, nice, fluffy mashed potatoes. These will definitely make your customers or your family very happy. So there you go, just a few uses for our food mills. In addition to what I’ve shown you, you can also use these for making purees for baby food. You can make clean fruit purees for gelato or ice cream. You can even make bread crumbs with these little machines. Possibilities are only limited by your imagination. I would not recommend this product to mill potatoes. I haven't tried it with anything else, but you are better off using a strainer and/or fork if you are thinking of using this item for potatoes.

We love our crepe maker! The many parties that we cater often require that we need specialty items and our crepe maker has been an amazing addition!

    Awesome food mill from Tellier

perfect, works great to pass potatoes through for our mash potatoes, or even four gnocchi for our other place. Comes with the 3 disk to change the size of items to pass

Excellent food mill for the price. Perfect size, takes a beating and can easily find replacement parts. I'm very happy with it and would definitely order it again.

I'm wondering why this product is so hard to put together. It also does not have a manual. Further, I found rust spots on what should be a brand new product. For such a basic piece of equipment I could justify the $100+ price tag if the quality was good and if it were easy to assemble and use.

It is a little stubborn to put together but once assembled it made the job do much easier. I use this for smooth tomatoes sauce and lump free mashed potatoes.

    from Family Kitchen Posted on

We love this. This is the same mill sold for about 30 percent more on a famous on line store, and it is indeed made in France -- at least according to the big words on the box. We have used this to make applesauce, only bothering to remove seeds before cooking the apples. It made a quart and a half in a very few minutes, was easy to clean and easy to use. If you get one, don't try to rotate the mill dry, you will be convinced it will never work, but it is smooth as honey once there is food there. Also be sure to put the round cutting surface high side up! That's all you need to know. I have a food processor, I have a more expensive brand, I have an immersion blender, but this for more gentle tasks (such as mashed potatoes and apple sauce) is very easy to use and easy to clean. love it!

I just received my mill and when assembling it the center post has a gap of about 1" before it hits the hole in the plate. Is this a defect? i have tried applying pressure but it doesn't seem to reach and makes it very unsteady. I'm new at using one of these - any advice?

Thank you for the review! It sounds like you may have received a defective unit. A Customer Solutions Representative will contact you shortly!

This Food Mill does the trick. I use it mostly for tomatoes. It fits over wide mouthed containers and holds a large capacity. The metal is a little thin so it works for me, might be too light weight for heavy duty use.

from Spoon Me Soups Posted on

Seemed to be of good quality when received, however after the first use, the weld broke off from the bracket that holds the handle mechinism in place. Faulty workmanship caused this to fail.

    from Un-Corked Posted on

Thank you for the review, Tom! We're sorry this had faulty welds. A Customer Solutions Representative was happy to work with you on this to make sure you were credited.

This is ideal for milling potatoes. I also use this for jams or any kind of fruit preparation where the pits or seeds need to be removed.

Best medium size food mill. Make sure to get the stainless version because its much much better than the tin plated one. This one will last.

    from Talula's Posted on

The kitchen staff uses our for mashed potatoes. It saves them so much time using the food mill instead of a regular masher. The mashed potatoes comeout more even when using this.

Great stainless steel food mill, actually well-made in France! Works great for mashed potatoes, tomato sauce and other purees. Larger than my last one but would purchase again.

This food mill functions well. Its capacity is large enough for kitchen operations and makes pureeing produce easier. Easy to assemble and clean as well.

from Love's Ice Cream Posted on

This # 3 food mill is a very versatile kitchen tool. The stainless steel construction makes it nice to keep clean and sanatized and seems to be well made.

If you want the fluffiest and smoothest mashed potatoes you've ever had, you NEED to invest in one of these. It's easy to use, durable and effective!

from Johnson & Wales Posted on

I always use this during the holiday season. Making apple sauce it my favorite item to use in the food mill. It catches the seeds and skins too.

This food mill is great for making gnocchi and creamy mashed potatoes! Really durable, but like any food mill...it's not the easiest to clean! Great product though!

i use this food mill all the time to make duchess potatoes. it does a really great job and the potatoes always have a great texture

This is a great and economical alternative to a food processor. especially if you plan on using it for mashed potatoes or refried beans. deffinetly worth the low price

Despite the lightweight design, this mill works better than any I've purchased, and has not broken despite very long use sessoions. I would definitely recommend this mill for anyone who needs to process small to medium quantities of product.

This was bought for and experiment to try out a re-fried bean recipe and is perfect for us, give the perfect texture to our beans and will never be using canned again

from Starters - Riverport Posted on

Initially I was unimpressed when I got this thing out of the box. It looks kind of cheapy and is pretty light-weight. But I must say it has exceeded expectations. It does exactly what it needs to do and hasn't given us any problems yet. We've used it mainly for apples and tomatoes so far. Can't beat the price - thanks.

We use this item everyday to make our spaghetti sauce. It works great for processing the carrots and tomatoes. We couldn't ask for a better price!
