Schwank: How Air Curtains Work

Schwank: How Air Curtains Work

Have you ever walked into a store and felt air blowing down on your head? If so, you may have wondered, "why is there air blowing down on me from above the door?" These units are actually called "air curtains," and are not intended to cool customers, but are installed for a much more valuable purpose that saves the store both energy and costs on their heating or air conditioning bill. In order to demonstrate how an air curtain works, we will use smoke candles to represent the air flow. Lets fire up some orange smoke candles to highlight the air being pulled through a fan into the Schwank air unit, and forced to the floor to create a 90% air seal. By creating a 90% air seal, the air curtain deters dust, prevents drafts, and saves energy by keeping conditioned air in the building. In order to demonstrate how the Schwank air unit saves energy, we will use a red and blue smoke candle to demonstrate air movement. The blue smoke candle represents the cool air, the red smoke candle represents the warm air. In the winter time, when the door opens and the air curtain is powered off, the heated air escapes the building and the cool air enters the building. Watch as the air curtain is powered on. You will notice the 90% air seal created by the air curtain prevents the heated air from escaping and the cool air from entering the building. The results are incredible! In the summer time, these effects are reversed. When the air curtain is powered off, the cooled air will escape the building and the hot summer air enters the building. Watch as the air curtain keeps the cool conditioned air inside and prevents the warm air from entering the building. This enhances comfort and decreases energy and those expensive utility bills by reducing the operating time of heating and air conditioning equipment. The air curtain essentially acts as an invisible door that people and equipment can easily move through safely with high visibility. Schwank air curtains are available for doors as high as 80 feet and can be used in most retail or commercial industrial applications. Schwank: How to Install an Air Curtain

Schwank: How to Install an Air Curtain

Use the following instructions to properly install your double frame unit. Upon receipt of unit, confirm that it is in good condition and check for all components. Remove packaging / crating. Single frame units are provided completely assembled, while double frame units require some assembly. Double frame units are shipped with the motors in the vertical or upright position. They must be re-positioned horizontally in order to join the units. Place 2 blocks perpendicular to the skid and reposition the first unit onto the blocks. This step will take at least two people to perform safely. Make sure not to damage the sheet metal during this step. Place 2 more blocks perpendicular to the skid and lower the second unit onto the blocks, ensuring the height of each frame is the same. Reposition the second unit to align with the first unit. Shim as required. Align the flange holes and bolt together with the 1/2" hardware supplied. Tighten all 4 bolts. Install the intake screens with the self-drilling screws provided. Space the screws about 24" apart. The air curtain is now ready to be positioned for lifting. Now, set-up the wall mount position. Top of wall mount should be 1" above the top of the door opening, and no more than 9" from the door jamb. Ensure the mounts are at the same height and plumb. Affix the wall mount with the appropriate means. If the mounts are to be bolted to the wall, they will have to be field drilled to accommodate the bolts. (3) 9 1/16" holes per wall mount spaced at 2", 8", and 24" for light duty wall mounts and at 2", 8", and 30" for heavy duty wall mounts. If the mounts are being welded to existing structure, these holes are not required, but may facilitate plug welding. Next, position the air curtain for lifting. To protect the bottom of the air curtain from fork damage, ensure the forks are clean and free of debris. Wrap the forks with cardboard. Center the forklift on the unit and position the forks under the air curtain. Check to make sure the forks do not extend past the back of the unit. Lift the unit slightly and ensure the unit is stable and level on the forks before proceeding. Adjust as required. Install all 4 extendable sliders in the unit. The flat face of the slider must be facing the front of the air curtain. Ensure the unit is centered on the door opening approximately 18" from the door. Lift the air curtain up and between the wall mounts. Ensure a safe clearance distance between the forks and the door. Standard lift and high lift overhead doors must be closed for this step. Check for other overhead obstructions. Once the air curtain is above the wall mounts, pull out the sliders to meet the wall mounts. Lower the unit onto the wall mounts. Ensure the unit is centered n the door opening. It is important that the air curtain be no more than 3" from the closest point on the door. Correct as required. Manually open the overhead door to ensure there are no interference issues. Correct any interferences as required. Using C-clamps, temporarily secure the sliders to the wall mounts. Leave the forklift in place until sliders are bolted to the wall mounts. Using the holes in the sliders as guides, drill 7/16" holes through the wall mount. Use the 1 1/2" x 3/8" bolts. washers, and lock washers to secure the sliders to the wall mounts. There are 8 slider holes to be drilled. Tighten all 8 bolts. Once the sliders are secured to the wall mounts, the forklift can be removed. Now affix the slider to the air curtain using the supplies self-drilling screws provided. Drill through the front face of the frame and into the slider. Repeat for the slider on the opposite side. Next, mount the sensor and reflector. Choose a location near the door - at least 3" from the door. Mount the sensor using the supplied mounting bracket, ensuring an unobstructed path to the door. Mount the reflector on the door directly in front of the sensor. Screws are provided. Provide power to the air curtain with the following steps. A qualified electrician must be used to run power to and connect the unit. For belt drive air curtains, the electrician will also be required to mount the supplied control panel and wire the photo sensor. Make sure to follow manufacturer's instructions and confirm proper motor rotation. To comission the air curtain, turn on the breaker and disconnect. If the air curtain is a belt drive unit, turn the keyed switch to the "Auto" position. A red pilot light on the control panel will turn on and a green and yellow LED on the sensor will be visible. The air curtain will not turn on until the photo sensor is programmed. If the air curtain is a direct drive unit, open the door and the air curtain will activate. If you have a belt drive unit, then complete the following instructions to program the sensor. The sensor will have the green and yellow LED lit. Green indicates that the sensor has power. Yellow indicates that the sensor and reflector are aligned. If the yellow is not lit, re-align the sensor. Using a pen or small screwdriver, press and hold the "Teach" button. First, the green LED will come on and go out, then the yellow, and then all three will start flashing. Once this happens, release the "Teach" button and green LED will flash, indicating the sensor is ready to be programmed. Follow the instruction manual to complete programming. To set the diffuser, open the door and the air curtain will activate. Open the door and all the way before beginning to set the diffuser(s). Using a 12" x 12" tissue or piece of film plastic (not supplied), begin by standing in the air stream. Then slowly move the tissue back and forth across the door threshold about 3-4" above the floor. Observe the tissue. It will move in one of three directions: back into the building, out of the building, or 'flip-flop' between the two. It is the 'flip-flop' that determines the location of the 'split'. The 'split' must be located in the middle of the door jambs. Adjust the diffuser(s) to achieve the correct 'split' location. This step is essential for effective and efficient air curtain function. Once the diffuser(s) are set, tighten the bolts at each end of the diffusers to lock them in position. With that final step, you are ready to enjoy your air curtain.
