Not an actual chalkboard, but a piece of textured black plastic. Tried writing with the "American Metalcraft BLSMA100V4CO Securit All-Purpose Mini Tip Chalk Marker Assortment - 4/Pack" that was suggested, and the ink seems to bead as you write. Not sure if the issue is with the markers or with the plastic board. Looks decent and feels sturdy. Fairly price for what it is.
