Substitute for Saffron
Annatto seed is often used as a substitute for saffron's golden color at a fraction of the cost, but it does not duplicate that spice's unique flavor. Instead, annatto seed has a slightly bitter and peppery flavor with a hint of mint.
Saves Prep Time
This 16 oz. container of annatto seed is a cost-efficient option for high-volume kitchens. Dehydrated spices also last longer than fresh ingredients and are easier to store, making them the perfect addition to any busy, high-output kitchen.

The annatto seeds are great to place in tea bags to infuse my oils for my soaps and other various natural body products. It makes a beautiful orange.

For the longest time I couldn't figure what to use this spice for but the occasion has arise. I decided to grind up the seed and use it in tamales. I used this in the masa and didn't notice too much of a change in the taste but it did give it a nice orange color. After looking it up it's mostly used to dye things and has a very subtle flavor. It is worth experiencing at least once.

Good annatto seed with great flavor. Bought this as a saffron substitute and it works well. Having a spice grinder is a must, this stuff is tough to grind.
