Air curtain refrigerators are some of the most popular display cases in use for retailing food. They’re impulse sales drivers, since your customers don’t even have to open a door to grab a prepackaged food item or a drink. In this video, we’ll go over all types of air curtain merchandisers, and some of the considerations for purchasing and locating these highly profitable refrigerators. Before purchasing air curtain refrigerators, make sure you have an area where an air curtain can work. Because they rely on a blanket of forced air, rather than a door, there are special requirements that you need to keep in mind. These are important because not adhering to these requirements can wear out your unit, make it unable to maintain temperature, and void your warranty. First, temperature cannot exceed 75 degrees and relative humidity cannot exceed 55 percent in the area where you wish to use the merchandiser. Do not place these units near HVAC vents, fans, or doorways that would disrupt airflow. Also, do not place in direct sunlight. And make sure to keep the unit fully stocked. Air curtain merchandisers operate most efficiently when they have a full load of product. Keep in mind that you can only display prepackaged food and drinks. You cannot display open foods or any raw items in these units. Items going into an air curtain merchandiser should already be cold. These units are made to maintain temperature, not cool items. A night cover is a great idea to conserve energy. Night covers are an option on some units, and standard equipment on others. There are three basic types of merchandisers that we carry. Vertical air curtain refrigerators make fantastic end caps in your store and also work in the aisle. They give you the advantage of having highly profitable items placed at eye level. Horizontal air curtain merchandisers capture impulse sales in counter areas where customers are often waiting and ready to purchase. They can be a great, self-service way to sell drinks and tempting food products. Dual service merchandisers combine all the features of a grab-and-go horizontal air curtain merchandiser, with the added benefit of having a top half enclosed to sell bakery and other items. This top half can be either refrigerated or unrefrigerated, and has sliding glass doors in the rear for full service sales.
