How to Season a Pan

Seasoning your pans enables you to cook great-tasting food with minimal oil, butter, or fat. It also provides a stick-resistant surface, allowing for easy clean up, and will keep your pans from rusting quickly. Check out this video to learn how to season cast iron and carbon steel pans.

How to Season Your Pans

Pan seasoning is essential for keeping your pans performing their best in your kitchen. This instructional video will show you the proper steps to seasoning your cooking pans based on their material.

For a carbon steel pan, start by washing, rinsing, and drying the pan. Heat the pan on your range on medium to high heat, then add shortening to the pan. Use a clean dry towel to spread the shortening around the interior of the pan, creating an even coat. Remove the pan from the heat, wipe out the excess shortening and let it cool. You can repeat this process up to 3 more times. For a cast iron skillet, preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking pan with aluminum foil and set aside. Wash, rinse, and dry your skillet. Place the skillet in the oven for 15 minutes. Remove and coat the entire skillet with shortening, inside and out. Place the skillet in the oven for 45 minutes with the baking pan on a rack below it to catch any mess. You can repeat this process up to three more times.

    Pizza screens screen clean easy great crust dough large oven
    Great screens, we use these screens in our ovens to prevent pizzas from over cooking on the bottoms but we also use them when pizzas are served to allow airflow so our pies aren’t steaming while directly on a pizza pan. Superior product!!
    Could be a little thicker. The mesh is a pain to get clean without scrubbing it. Can easly bend when scrubbing it clean. This is 18" so bending was expected when I purchased this.
    This screen slows for a nice diamond shape on the crust of the pizza, Stromboli’s, and calzones. Holds up to high temperatures and doesn’t stick. Pizza is made with fresh dough. Others we brought for more has had the dough stick these are awesome and made with good quality metal! Highly recommendable and will purchase again! Thanks!
    Great quality pan! This is used as a pizza cutting pan as it is large enough to allow room to cut through the crusts. They have held up well!

    Are use pizza screens were great when the ovens are hot you don’t want to burn your pies so that’s where these things come into play .
    This is my favorite Pizza screen I love that i can cook large pizzas on it .the crust becomes like a News York style pizza with the outside of the crust being crispy and the inside slightly soft and chewy .Hands down my best purchase .

    Heavy duty pizza pan that we use for serving dine in guests. Heavy weight and won't bend easily. bumps allow heat and steam to escape to keep the crust from getting soggy.
    These are nice high quality pizza screens. I use them on both fresh dough and frozen par baked dough. Only suggestion is to use pan spray when using fresh dough
    Once seasoned, these screens function very well in a high heat commercial oven. I use these screens continually throughout the day and they have a decent durability. I will continue to purchase this product in the future.

    Great aluminum pizza screen. Screen mesh is durable and round shape has maintained well. With this being an 18" screen strength has been very good as well with the larger pizza. Very easy to clean.

    Invaluable item. Large size can be used with any pizza. Using a screen allows air flow without placing directly on a stone making it very easy to insert and remove from oven.
